There is a deeply rooted cultural tradition in Turkey of melting lead to dispel nazar, the evil eye. Lead is melted on a gas range in a small pot and the person with nazar is seated with a sheet covering their head and shoulders. The melted lead is circled above the head a few times and then poured into a separate pot full of cold water. The lead freezes as it hits the water and forms figurines that can be interpreted by the wise eye. This is repeated with Quranic prayers and usually executed by older woman or villagers.
The tradition has a long history, it goes back to the pre-Islamic Shamanist and Tengriist beliefs of the Turks. They would call it “kut kuyma” and do it to break the evil spell. Perhaps, there are only a few customs in Turkish culture that predate the conversion to Islam and “kurşun dökme” is definitely one of those weird but interesting traditions.
